KEEP YOUR RECEIPT!
Though this blog may be short, it’ll be oh so sweet because who doesn’t love money!
In this post I am going to give you some resources to help you find incentives and rebates for your home improvement project that includes saving energy and becoming more sustainable.
So SAVE THOSE RECEIPTS because that’ll be your ticket to either some pocket cash or evening expanding your project!
What type of projects are these incentives for?
Are you familiar with the Energy Pyramid? If you are planning a project that hits one of the four parts of the pyramid, you may qualify to receive an incentive or rebate. It all depends on where you live and what’s currently available.
I’ll give you some quick examples, but this list is far from comprehensive of the types of qualifying projects. Follow the links I provided to learn a bit more about each section of the pyramid.
- Conversation: think reducing infiltration and increasing insulation. Weather stripping around windows and doors reduces loss of conditioned air. Insulation reduces conduction heat loss through exterior walls, roof, and floor. Completely replacing windows and doors could qualify as well.
- Energy Efficiency: are you installing more efficiency equipment? Whether you are installing LED light bulbs, a new boiler, new Air Conditioner, or Energy Star appliances, check to see if it qualifies for a rebate. If you are trying to figure out the efficiency of your unit, this post may help.
- Demand Management: think of this step as “how you control your house/building”. Things that qualify here are smart thermostats or signing up for a Demand Response Program.
- Renewable Energy: Finally, everyone is talking about solar these days. So definitely check out to see if there is a program in your neighborhood for solar. However, don’t stop there! Solar isn’t for everyone, check out opportunities for geothermal, wind, or energy storage technologies.
Where to find incentives and rebates?
Look no further than DSIRE. Warning: Please check spelling before hitting Enter! You don’t want to accidentally go to the wrong page…a not safe for work page…
In general, the places to look for rebates are:
- Your local Utility Company (Electric, Gas, & Water)
- State Website
- County Website
- City Website
- Manufacturer Website of Product you are purchasing
- Don’t forget about Tax Credits!
Finally, here are some more places to look:
